Impregnating Process Seals Porosity in Metal Parts to Within the Leak Band of Test Equipment

IMPCO’s metal impregnating process seals porous metal parts so effectively that they are as tight or better than the equipment used to test them. With parts that test within the leak band of the testing equipment, any perceived leaking could actually be from the testing equipment itself.

A pioneer in the field of dry vacuum-pressure impregnation, IMPCO, Inc., permanently seals porous cast-metal and powdered metal parts with a variety of proprietary resins. Since porosity is especially problematic for parts designed to contain liquids or gases under pressure, the IMPCO process is designed to seal both macro and micro porosity, filling all voids completely. This process works for ferrous and nonferrous metals and their alloys as well as for wood, plastic, and ceramics. The IMPCO system accommodates parts of virtually any size.

Although recent advances in die casting technology have improved the quality of cast parts, in many cases the result is simply a delayed reaction, or “late leaker”. The IMPCO process will seal even the microscopic porosity found in these parts, permanently sealing them and eliminating leaks now and in the future.

Users of the IMPCO process can decrease manufacturing costs and increase productivity by assuring part quality and dramatically reducing rejects. Impregnated parts also enhance machinability, minimize corrosion and oxidation, and provide better resistance to heat and chemicals.

The IMPCO impregnation process completely cleans the parts, places them in a vacuum, and removes all air from the pores. The sealant is then introduced while the parts are still under vacuum. A pressure cycle then forces the sealant deep into the porous cavities of the part for positive sealing. After impregnation the part’s surface is rinsed to prevent residue, and the impregnated sealant is then allowed to cure.

IMPCO provides impregnating services with fast turnaround and full compliance certification in accordance with appropriate industry and government standards. All sealants are certified to current military impregnation standards (MIL-STD 276A and MIL-STD-I-17563C), which form the basis of many automotive, and general industry requirements.
